BB&T Corp. announced Monday it is contributing $500,000 to help support disaster relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma.

Half of the donation will be a cash contribution to the American Red Cross and the remainder will comprise eight truckloads of humanitarian supplies, such as bottled water and basic essentials to assist in the recovery.

"As so many of the communities we serve in Florida and the Southeast begin the recovery process, BB&T is honored to be a small part of the effort to help people get back on their feet," said Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Kelly S. King in a news release.

BB&T is based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Clients who may have incurred storm-related overdraft, returned item, negative account balance or late loan payment fees related to the storm are encouraged to contact BB&T at 800-BANK-BBT (800-226-5228) for assistance.

In the areas impacted by Hurricane Irma through Sept. 30:

  • Clients will not be charged for the use of any non-BB&T ATMs
  • Fees charged to BB&T clients by other financial institutions for the use of their ATMs will be refunded
  • Non-BB&T clients who withdraw cash from a BB&T ATM will not be charged
