• The Downtown Action Plan published by the Jacksonville Economic Development Commission has been selected for the First Coast Chapter of the American Planning Association’s 2008 Outstanding Master Plan Award. It will be presented to JEDC Executive Director Ron Barton at the FCAPA’s Summer Luncheon June 6 at the University of North Florida. The Downtown Action Plan is a 19-step process designed to enhance Downtown Jacksonville in the areas of retail open space, housing and the pedestrian experience.

• The Clara White Mission was also recognized by the American Planning Association and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development with the 2008 HUD Secretary’s Opportunity and Empowerment Award. The award is given each year to a project that demonstrates improved quality of life for low- and moderate-income community residents. The Clara White Mission was established in 1928 and offers social service programs including transitional housing, case management, vocational training and life skills instruction.

• Dennis Lockhart, president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, is the guest speaker at the Cornerstone Regional Development Partnership’s second quarterly luncheon. It’s June 2 at the Hyatt. Cornerstone is the economic development division of the Jacksonville Regional Chamber of Commerce.

• Speaking of the Chamber, its International Department will host several members of the international media. June 12, the group will meet with members of the local media to discuss their impression of Jacksonville and what they may write about the area.

• A local art student will soon have one of her creations hanging in Washington, D.C. Stephanie Morales, a student at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, won “Best in Show” in U.S. Rep. Ander Crenshaw’s annual Congressional Art Competition. Students from all over the 4th Congressional District entered the contest to have their artwork displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year. In addition to a trip to Washington for the exhibit’s ribbon-cutting ceremony, Morales will also receive a $500 donation for art supplies and a renewable $5,000 per year scholarship to Savannah College of Art and Design.
