City Notes: Groundwork Jacksonville honored for cleanup efforts

The award recognizes Groundwork’s efforts to clean up Jacksonville’s waterways and its active involvement in the urban core.

Other 2017 honorees were Clean Waterway Society, Rising Tides, Beaches Sea Turtle Patrol and the Island Keepers.

Melody Starr Anne Bishop died in March 2009 at age 21 from ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). In 2009, outgoing council President Ronnie Fussell established the award for community service by a citizen or organization.

AIA announces 2017 Design and Honor Award winners

The American Institute of Architects announced its 2017 Design and Honor Awards winners:

Award of Excellence — General Built: Kasper Architects & Associates — St. Thérèse Early Learning Center, Saint Johns.
Award of Excellence — General Unbuilt: Haskell Architects — Student Housing Phase II project designed for Embry-Riddle University in Prescott, Arizona.
Award of Merit — General Built: Haskell Architects — The U.S. Coast Guard Maritime Safety and Security Team facility in Houston.
Award of Excellence — Residential Built: Renard Architecture — Coastal residence along Florida A1A.
Award of Merit — General Built: Ebert Norman Brady Architects – Arlington Community Academy along Fort Caroline Road.
Award of Merit — Residential Built: Richard Skinner & Associates, Architects — Beach residence.
Award of Merit — General Unbuilt: POND, Michael Baker International - Jacksonville Regional Transportation Center Downtown.
The Chapter Service Award was presented to Kristopher Linster and the chapter’s Community Service Award was given to City Council President Lori Boyer and Dorina Barkini.
The Linda Mack Award was presented to Glenn Hettinger; the Mellen C. Greely Craftsmanship Award went to The Riverside Partnership, Jeff Lane; the Test of Time Award went to Kathryn Stater and Jeff Simpson; and the President’s Award was given to Tracey Friley.

CFM names Bell president

Joy Bell has taken over as president of Client Focused Media. She will be responsible for management of staff and client services, community engagement and growth, and long-term strategic planning. Bell joined CFM in 2016 as an account executive. Mike White is CEO and founder of CFM. Bell succeeds former president Meredith Tekin.

Dunavant to lead at GM HILL

GM HILL, a full-service design-build company, announced architect Todd Dunavant will lead the architectural efforts of its design-build teams.

Another Broken Egg Cafè to open at Beaches

Another Broken Egg Café plans to open a breakfast, lunch and brunch restaurant July 17 at 2230 S. Third St. in Jacksonville Beach.

Before that, it will offer free meals July 14-15 benefiting two local charities — In the Pink, a boutique for cancer patients, and the Greater Jacksonville Area USO, supporting veterans and their families.

The 3,200-square-foot restaurant will operate 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily. Jake Alleman is the owner.

Arana named executive chef at soon-to-open River & Post

Elizabeth Arana was hired as executive chef at the soon-to-open River & Post restaurant at 1000 Riverside Ave.

She trained under Wolfgang Puck, Eric Ripert, David Burke and Alain Ducasse and was educated at the Culinary Institute of America and the University of Florida.

River & Post will open in the fall.

Arana will manage the kitchen design and service processes and be responsible for the menu and its preparation. She also will oversee the kitchen staff.

Area’s fifth Newk’s to open Monday at Town Center

Newk’s Eatery will open Monday in Town Center Promenade at 4520 Town Center Parkway near St. Johns Town Center. It will be its fifth area location.

The 4,200-square-foot fast-casual restaurant will offer indoor dining for 138 guests and patio seating for 40 more. There also is a Grab-N-Go cooler section with sandwiches, salads, soups, desserts and beverages.

The Town Center Newk’s will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
