City notes: Single seats available for Florida Country Superfest

The Florida Country Superfest is returning to Jacksonville June 13-14 at EverBank Field, with single-day seats available to the public.

Until Tuesday, only two-day packages were available. Terrace Suite tickets also are available in single-day quantities, which come with full-service buffet, unlimited non-alcoholic beverages and six drink tickets.

Special stage-front, standing-room tickets in an area called the Golden Horseshoe also are available in limited supply.

The Saturday, June 13, show features Zac Brown Band, Keith Urban, Cole Swindell, David Nail and Danielle Bradbery. The Sunday, June 14, show has Kenny Chesney, Brantley Gilbert, Tyler Farr, Colt Ford and The Swon Brothers.

Giant missle coming to Northbank

The Global Zero movement is bringing its “No $1 Trillion Nuclear Arsenal” rally to town, with an inflatable missile being paired with 3D artwork to “illustrate the growing nuclear threat and the humanitarian devastation if such a weapon were detonated in a city,” according to a news release.

Global Zero is an international movement calling for the elimination of all nuclear weapons.

One Spark to feature 5K this year in Downtown

One Spark has a new event to add to this year’s crowdfunding festival’s entertainment — and running shoes could help.

Organizers announced Tuesday the One Spark 5K will be 8-11 a.m. April 11. It will be a two-lap course that starts and finishes in Hemming Park and goes through Downtown’s streets. Participants will receive a One Spark 5K T-shirt and access to the a VIP tent.

Runners can register at onespark5K.com. Pricing varies — the first 10 registrations are $5, with costs rising $5 for each tier of entrants, culminating with $35 for those No. 500 and above. The fee is $45 on race day.

Ritz Chamber Players headed to Beaches

The Ritz Chamber Players will play a concert from 6:30-8 p.m. Feb. 17 in the Beaches Chapel.

The show is hosted by the Beaches Museum and History Park and is free to the public, although a $10 donation is encouraged.

The Ritz Chamber Players has a mission of fostering appreciation of chamber music through performances and educational outreach featuring prominent African-American musicians and composers. The group has performed at organizations like the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony and Carnegie Hall.

Civil-rights attorney Dees to talk justice at UNF

Trial attorney and author Morris Dees will discuss “With Justice for All in a Changing America” during an event Feb. 19 at the University of North Florida’s Herbert University Center.

A question-and-answer session will follow the 6:30 p.m. lecture.

Dees is a graduate of the University of Alabama Law School and is the founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center. The nonprofit was founded in 1971 and specializes in lawsuits involving civil rights violations, domestic terrorists and racially motivated crimes.

He focuses much of his attention today on anti-government militias.

The lecture is hosted by the African-American Student Union among others. It is free, although an e-ticket is required. They can be acquired at unf.edu/lectures.

Main Library to host job fair and workshops

The Jacksonville Public Library will host a free job and resource fair from 9 a.m.-noon Tuesday.

It will be in the conference center of the Main Library Downtown.

The library has partnered with CareerSource, Beaver Street Enterprise Center, E3 Business Group Inc., Transition Link Consulting and the Jacksonville Housing Authority for the event.

CareerSource will host two free workshops, “Getting Ready for an Interview” and “How To’s for a Successful Job Search,” while E3 Business Group will present a “So You Want to Be an Entrepreneur” workshop.

Participating employers include the city, Lowe’s, Winn-Dixie, Portus, Omni Hotel, Florida State College at Jacksonville, Waffle House and Western & Southern Life Insurance.

UF Health forms new unit

UF Health Jacksonville has formed a new occupational medicine program that will be led by Dr. Robert Chapa Sr.

The UF Health Occupational Medicine Program will help employers create safer work environments and improve the health and well-being of employees. It will do so through injury prevention programs and wellness education among other aspects.

The program will be staffed and coordinated by a team of board-certified physicians who work with caregivers and other UF Health physicians. In all, his team has more than 25 years of experience in caring for injured workers and managing care.

“UF Health has presented me with an incredible opportunity to create a comprehensive occupational medicine program for business throughout Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia,” Chapa said in a news release. “We bring unique expertise to providing a variety of occupational medicine services, from workers’ compensation to employee wellness.”

Urban Education Symposium this Saturday

The Jacksonville Community Engagement Group is hosting an Urban Education Symposium from 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday Downtown at the Main Library.

The discussion will focus on challenges impacting school performance and overall achievement of black males in Jacksonville, with the main question being “Who is teaching and leading our children in the classroom?”

Mayor Alvin Brown is scheduled to provide opening remarks and Nikolai Vitti, Duval County Public Schools superintendent, is scheduled to give an update on public schools.

DIA schedules two meetings next week

The Downtown Investment Authority has scheduled two additional meetings this month, one concerning the retail enhancement program and the other dealing with historic buildings and code enforcement.

The historic workshop will be 3-4 p.m. Feb. 11 in Conference Room A on the third floor of City Hall.

The retail enhancement committee will meet at 10 a.m. Feb. 12 in Conference Room C on the third floor of City Hall.

Suter joins Health Planning Council 

The Health Planning Council has hired Emily Suter as the organization’s health planning director.

She comes from the team that developed the Florida Method for Health Impact Assessments, presented to the National HIA Conference in Washington, D.C.

In addition, she was the lead researcher for the Kings Ridge Apartment Complex rapid HIA project and consulted on the Brentwood HIA, both in Jacksonville.

Suter has master’s degrees in public health and urban and regional planning from Florida State University.

She will lead initiatives to assess the health of residents and develop programs that address their needs.

The Health Planning Council serves Baker, Clay, Duval, Flagler, Nassau, St. Johns and Volusia counties.

Tucker Rocky/Biker’s Choice expands 

Tucker Rocky/Biker’s Choice has expanded its Florida distribution center by 80,000 square feet, investing more than $3 million and creating 20 jobs to serve dealers and consumers.

The center is at 8700 Jesse B. Smith Court, on Jacksonville’s Westside.

The company is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, with Jacksonville’s center one of seven across the U.S. It offers more than 100,000 products for street, custom, touring and off-road motorcycles, ATVs and UTVs.

No DDRB meeting this month

The February meeting of the Downtown Development Review Board has been canceled. There were no items needing review for the Thursday meeting.
