On a day when America celebrated Major League Baseball’s all-stars, Jacksonville baseball fans celebrated the life of one of their own.

Several hundred fans and friends turned out in the rain and lightning Tuesday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville for a viewing and funeral service for longtime Jacksonville Suns owner Peter Bragan Sr.

Bragan, 89, died Saturday from heart failure.

“I think it’s just a tribute to the man he was and all of the things he has done,” said Peter Bragan Jr., his son and Suns president. “It makes me feel great to see everyone here.”

As part of the service, fans were able to ring the bell Bragan Sr. rang for Suns victories and home runs.

Many did, while others simply paid their respects.

“He was the heart and soul of this community and really touched the life of many. He brought a lot of life to this city. He meant so much to this community and will be sorely missed,” said Mayor Alvin Brown.

“You can’t think of baseball and Jacksonville and not think of Bragan,” said Mike Bouda, City Sports and Entertainment manager.

Others talked about their memories.

“Sitting there on the bench, going over the players and ringing that bell. He knew all the players,” said Sheriff John Rutherford. “Just a gentle soul.”

Ten-year ticketholder Terry Davis, wearing a No. 41 Mike Stanton Suns jersey, said Bragan always was friendly.

“They make you feel like family,” she said referring to the team and the Bragans.
