The late Frederick Schultz will be featured in the next Legacy Series by Leadership Jacksonville at 9:30 p.m. April 9 on WJCT.
Schultz was a civic leader who worked toward improvement of public schools. He and his wife, Nancy, have been benefactors of the Schultz Center for Teaching & Leadership.
Produced by Lindsey Films, the third installment of the video series spotlights Schultz's legacy as a public servant. Schultz served in the Florida House of Representatives from 1963-70, serving as House speaker the last two years.
While there, he was instrumental in bringing the University of North Florida and Florida Junior College — now Florida State College at Jacksonville — to the region.
In 1976, Schultz became chairman of the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce, now called JAX Chamber, and hosted the Amelia Island Conference that led to the creation of Leadership Jacksonville and Jacksonville Community Council Inc.
From 1979-82, he served as vice chairman of the Federal Reserve System board of governors. He also served as chairman of the Florida Institute of Education from 1983-87.
With a $1 million dollar grant from Schultz, the Schultz Center for Teaching & Leadership was created through state-matched grants and locally raised private donations and opened in February 2002.
Schultz died in November 2009 at the age of 80.
The first two installments of the legacy series featured Jacksonville University Chancellor Emeritus Frances Bartlett Kinne and civil rights activist Alton Yates.
Leadership Jacksonville continues to seek funding and support for the Jacksonville Legacy Series, which is supported through fundraising initiatives led by Leadership Jacksonville.

Gate buys Emerson property
Gate Petroleum Co. paid $1.1 million for property at 3100 Emerson St. for construction of a new convenience store.
It bought the property from DBSB Inc., whose president is J.C. Demetree Jr. The deed was signed March 25.
The Daily Record reported March 1 that the City approved the construction permit for a new Gate Petroleum Co. store at 3150 Philips Highway. Auld & White Constructors LLC is the contractor for the 3,968-square-foot store at a project cost of $900,000.
The Daily Record previously reported Gate would buy 2.28 acres of a 9.57-acre tract to develop the store, according to plans filed with the City.
The existing Gate store at 3230 Emerson St. is about 2,400 square feet on a half-acre. The building was constructed in 1969, property records show.
The new store apparently will replace the smaller existing store.
DBSB is associated with the Jacksonville-based Demetree Brothers Inc. real estate development, construction management and property management company.
Property records show DBSB has owned the site, which includes a two-story, 75,000-square-foot office building, since 1997. DBSB bought the building, constructed in 1979, from BellSouth Telecommunications Inc.
Harris Dunn, vice president of DBSB and vice president and CFO of Demetree Brothers, and Larry Matthews, Demetree Brothers vice president for commercial developments, said previously the goal was to lease or sell the office building to a single user. It sits on about 7.5 acres after the smaller parcel is sold to Gate.
The office structure was built for Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Co. Dunn and Matthews said it most recently was leased by Precision Response Corp. and has been vacant almost 10 years. It is referred to in City plans as the 3100 Emerson Building.
Herlong C store approved
The City approved construction for a 6,000-square-foot convenience store at 9000 Normandy Blvd., called the Herlong Airport C store on plans.
As reported, Energy Unlimited Corp. of Orange Park has proposed the convenience store on 2.84 acres between Herlong Road and Normandy Boulevard. The engineer and agent is Eisman & Russo.
Petroleum Construction is the contractor for the $1.2 million project.
It also is the contractor for a 2,000-square-foot building next to it at a cost of $3,000.
VyStar signs OK'd in Riverside
Signs for VyStar Credit Union were approved for the former First Guaranty Bank and Trust Co. building at 760 Riverside Ave.
Brown Enterprises is the contractor for the four signs at a project cost of $20,533.
As reported in February, VyStar Credit Union bought the former First Guaranty Bank and Trust Co. of Jacksonville property for $1.5 million from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., which was appointed the receiver for First Guaranty.
Records show the two-story, 13,500-square-foot building and property carried a 2012 taxable value of $1.85 million.
The Daily Record reported in October that property records showed the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. had recently sold several former First Guaranty Bank and Trust Co. properties, including another to Jacksonville-based VyStar at 10903 Baymeadows Road for $1.64 million.
