ING U.S., which leases space in The Prominence office center, is changing its name to Voya.

The company says on its voya.com website that ING U.S. will become Voya Financial this year as part of a rebranding.

“We completed an IPO in 2013, and we’ll soon operate as an independent U.S.-based company,” it said. It is listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol VOYA.

“The next important step for us is rebranding, which involves changing all our products and services from ‘ING’ to ‘Voya,’” said the site.

“This is no small task for a company that serves 13 million individual and institutional customers across the United States.”

The site says Voya is an abstract name coined from the word ‘voyage’ and “reflects momentum and optimism, with an eye towards the future.”

The city approved a permit Thursday for a new sign for Voya at the offices at 8900 Freedom Commerce Center Parkway. Prominence is the new name for Freedom Commerce Centre.

ING U.S. operates in about 98,400 square feet of space in the Gunti Building.

The city approved renovations for ING in November that a spokesman said would allow the company to add 30 employees to allow for 600.

The company says it remains ING U.S. for now but is beginning to introduce the new

name.

ING is a financial, retirement, investment and insurance company. ING U.S. has been the U.S.-based operation of ING Groep N.V., which is based in the Netherlands. ING U.S. is based in New York.

ING U.S. came to Jacksonville by way of its 2008 acquisition of CitiStreet LLC, which leased the Freedom Commerce Centre building.

Boca Raton-based Crocker Partners bought the 54-acre Freedom Commerce Centre office park in December 2012.
