Law Day is a day set aside each year to celebrate the rule of law. May 1 is the official date, but many celebrations take place before and after that date throughout the U.S by Bar associations and legal organizations.

This year’s Law Day theme is “The 14th Amendment: Transforming American Democracy.”

Ratified nearly 150 years ago, it guarantees the rights of due process and equality under the law. Through this amendment, most of the protections in the Bill of Rights became enforceable against the states for the first time.

It also defined citizenship and barred states from denying any citizen the privileges and immunities of citizenship.

The Jacksonville Bar Association has kicked off its Law Week festivities with a school supply and toiletries drive.

The school supplies needed for West Riverside Elementary School include watercolors, markers, sharpened color pencils, clay and clay marking tools, specialty art paper (drawing, watercolor, etc.) and construction paper.

Toiletries will be donated to Downtown Ecumenical Services.

The organization accepts full or travel size personal care items such as toothpaste, soap, shampoo, deodorant, perfume, lotion, tissues, and shaving supplies.
