When it comes to Florida Bar Board of Governors seats, typically there aren’t many races. Next month, there will be one.
Fred Franklin, former city General Counsel and a shareholder with Rogers Towers, announced Friday his intent to run for one of the two 4th Circuit seats. His choice is seat one, which has been held by GrayRobinson shareholder Grier Wells since 2002.
The 52-member board serves without pay and is the authority that adopts policy matter for the Florida Bar’s activities. Each of the state’s 20 circuits has two members, as does the Young Lawyers Division and the public. There also are four out-of-state members.
The last contested local seat was in 2011 when Michael Tanner succeeded over two other attorneys. That race happened after Jake Schickel ran for Florida Bar president and had to step down.
Public defender to offer pro bono training
The Office of the Public Defender will offer its annual Pro Opportunities training program at no cost for attorneys from 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Feb. 21.
The course is in accordance with the Jacksonville Bar Association’s One Campaign that encourages member attorneys to provide pro bono services to those in need.
The day-long Continuing Legal Education course prepares private attorneys in criminal who are then appointed special assistant public defender and assigned a misdemeanor client.
The course comprises sessions that discuss office procedure, driving under the influence, misdemeanor offenses, criminal procedure and ethics and professionalism.
The pro bono opportunities are coordinated by County Court Director Kate Bedell. Those interested in attending can email her at [email protected].
