Executive Director, Character Counts! In Jacksonville

Mission
Our mission is to create a more ethical community based on character by:

• Delivering character and ethics education.

• Fostering meaningful ethics-based conversations and experiences.

• Creating accountability partners.

• Developing social enterprises rooted in character.

Serving Jacksonville
Since 1997.

Those served
Greater Jacksonville. We have delivered more than 4,000 hours of character and ethics training to approximately 3,000 students, civil employees, business leaders, athletic coaches, teachers, parents and ex-felons. We support the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, City Rescue Mission, Beaver Street Enterprises, the JAX Chamber and Teen Court, to name a few organizations.

Biggest challenge
My greatest challenge is keeping our community engaged in this complex topic. It is an area of social change that is hard to quantify, yet we intuitively know the importance of the conversations. Seeing the long-term effects of the work is dependent on ongoing community involvement in the conversations and the willingness to identify successes.

Biggest satisfaction
In the many forums I am honored to serve, I see the whole of Jacksonville represented, culturally, socially, religiously, intellectually, economically and emotionally. My greatest satisfaction is that through teaching the language of “The Six Pillars of Character” I am able to see that we are all the same. We all desire to live lives of character and strive to do the best we can each day. I have learned that what we as a community desire most is a sense of accountability and a community that is respectful enough to hold that space.

Hometown
Central Islip, N.Y.

First experience with community service
I did my first community service as a high-school student. I volunteered at our local Head Start program, teaching art to children. I learned that being able to express ourselves and to be heard is important to our sense of self-worth.

Your job before Character Counts
Director of User Experience at Citibank. I ran a creative team that supported the global credit card websites for the credit-card division. It gave me the ability to think strategically and create tactical action plans.

Upcoming events
Feb. 13: 8:30-10 a.m., monthly Ethics Coalition breakfast meeting, “Caring for the Spirit at Work,” Perdue Office Systems, 5 W. Forsyth St., Suite 100.
