Foundations host football camp for Bortles’ JaxPAL
The Blake Bortles Foundation, the Police Athletic League Jacksonville and Jacksonville Orthopaedic Institute Foundation hosted the second annual Blake Bortles JaxPAL Football Camp, a free youth non-contact football camp for more than 400 boys and girls ages 5 to 16 on Saturday. Area high school and college coaches led campers through traditional football drills and activities, with Bortles and guests from the Jacksonville Jaguars assisting throughout the morning.
Birdies for Charity winner donates $5,000 to River Garden
River Garden Senior Services donor Gerry Bettman was the winner of The Players Championship Birdies for Charity program.
The program is an opportunity for charitable organizations to use the tournament to further their fundraising programs.
Bettman guessed the exact number of birdies that would be made during the competitive rounds and had the closest answer to the tiebreaker question from the more than 9,000 entries to take the grand prize.
He made his $5,000 Birdies for Charity donation at the 21st Annual River Garden Classic at Deerwood Country Club.
The tournament was sponsored by Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home Dignity Memorial to benefit The Albert Z. Fleet Geriatric Training School on the campus of River Garden Senior Services.
The center is a post-secondary training school established in 1995 on the River Garden campus.
The school provides learning opportunities including initial and continuous training for residents at River Garden.

Meninak offering $40,000 grant for group serving kids
The Meninak Club of Jacksonville is accepting applications for its annual Charity Project Award. The $40,000 grant will be awarded to a charity organization in Northeast Florida that serves underprivileged or handicapped children and must be used for a capital improvement.
More than $1 million has been distributed to charity organizations through Meninak Club member donations to the Meninak Charity Foundation. Past recipients include St. Augustine Youth Services, Girls Incorporated, Youth Crisis Center, Safe Harbor Home for Boys, Baptist Home for Children and Boys and Girls Clubs of Jacksonville.
The deadline for submitting an application is July 15. The organization selected for the grant will be announced by the club at its meeting Sept. 18.

City and Three Rivers law firm provide free services for veterans
The city’s Military Affairs and Veterans Department and Three Rivers Legal Services will host a free legal consultation for veterans and their families at 9 a.m. Thursday in Suite 120 at City Hall. Three Rivers Legal Services can provide assistance with family law, social security/SSI, discharge review assistance, VA pensions, guardianship for the disabled, unfair collections, last will and testament and other civil legal services.

At 1 p.m., also in Suite 120, the department will host its free monthly career and employment counseling seminar for veterans, transitioning military members, National Guard and Reserve members and their family members.
Services include career counseling, tips on writing a resume, interview preparation tips, translation of military skills to civilian jobs and other assistance in preparing for a successful post-military career. The event is supported by Hero 2 Hired, a Department of Defense employment initiative.

Berry Good Farms Café opens at The Arc
The Berry Good Farms Café at The Arc Jacksonville Village opened June 5 as a partnership between The Arc Jacksonville and the North Florida School of Special Education.
The Café offers $6 dinner service for Village residents Monday through Friday. Discounted meal plans are available.
The dinner preparation and service will engage students from the North Florida School and Village residents.
Monthly family nights are planned to help connect families and residents, and a culinary day training program will begin this fall.
Berry Good Farms Café will incorporate organic fruits, vegetables and herbs grown at the farm into the meals served each day.
Students and residents will learn how to plan and prepare healthy meals, helping them gain more independence and strengthening their social skills.
The Village was created at the request of young adults and their families for a safe environment where those who need some lifestyle support could independently establish a home.
The Village is an apartment-style, affordable neighborhood for 121 adults age 18 and older.
It has become a national model to promote socializing and sharing among residents plus engagement in the surrounding community.
The Arc Jacksonville advocates for and serves community members with diagnoses including Down syndrome, autism, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, cerebral palsy and other types of developmental delays.
The North Florida School of Special Education serves students between ages 6 and 22 with intellectual disabilities and also offers a post-graduate program for young adults between 22 and 40.
