Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center was approved for the next phase of construction Tuesday at 1301 Palm Ave. at a cost of $123 million.

The city also approved a permit for a $13 million mechanical project by W.W. Gay Mechanical Contractor Inc. for heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, a cooling tower and other equipment.

DPR Construction of West Palm Beach and Perry-McCall Construction are building the nine-story, 332,000-square-foot addition to the existing Anderson cancer center. The permit shows a 10th-floor room for electrical and HVAC equipment.

DPR said July 12 that the final two beams, signed by patients, family members, visitors, team members and physicians, were raised to the top of the building.

Baptist MD Anderson is under development on two blocks across San Marco Boulevard from the current MD Anderson center at 1235 San Marco Blvd., which opened in October 2015.

The total $180 million project should be open by mid-2018. Groundbreaking was in June 2016 and the foundation permit was approved in September.

The construction includes a four-story parking deck for 600 vehicles and a bridge across San Marco Boulevard to the existing center.

Baptist Health said previously the addition “will dramatically expand the comprehensive cancer care available and provide inspiration and hope for cancer patients through state-of-the-art cancer treatment.”

The project was announced in September 2014. It will feature medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, physician specialists, nurses and clinical support staff, Baptist said. Patients are assigned clinical nurse navigators to guide them through the process.

Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center is organized as 10 cancer clinics to each treat specific cancer types.

When Baptist Health and The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center announced the partnership, they said Baptist Health will become a partner member in the MD Anderson Cancer Network.

MD Anderson, based in Houston, says it is the largest freestanding cancer center in the world. It opened in 1941.
