Jennifer Lee, President, National Multiple Sclerosis Society, North Florida Chapter

Mission

We mobilize people and resources to drive research for a cure and to address the challenges of everyone affected by multiple sclerosis. MS is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system. Symptoms may be mild, such as numbness in the limbs, or severe, such as paralysis or loss of vision. The progress is unpredictable and symptoms vary.

Serving Jacksonville

The chapter was founded in 1973.

Those served

Serves 34 counties across North Florida, with more than half of the client base living in the First Coast area. Because MS is a chronic illness, typically diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 40, the society provides programs and services for many different audiences outside of those directly affected by the disease. In 2009, the North Florida chapter served nearly 20,000 people with programs and services ranging from Kids Camp for children whose parents have MS to family days, respite weekends and more.

Biggest challenge

Gaining vital awareness for the work that the society does. The marketplace is so full of worthwhile organizations doing amazing work, it can make it difficult to rise above. The number of people affected by MS is relatively small compared to so many other disease groups, so gaining exposure for our programs and services can be more difficult. Fortunately, some of our larger mass market events help us gain widespread awareness during their period of promotion.

Biggest satisfaction

Everyday I come to work and know that I am making a difference in the lives of others. Over my almost two decades with the society, I have been privileged to see significant breakthroughs in fundraising, programs and most importantly, research into the cause and cure of multiple sclerosis. Someday, I am confident I will be able to tell my grandkids, “I helped to find the cure for MS.”

Hometown

Mattituck, N.Y., on the eastern end of Long Island – a true paradise!

First experience with community service

When I was in elementary school, UNICEF was a big part of our Halloween tradition. We also participated in the CROP Walk as kids and seemingly an endless stream of fundraising events.

Job before the MS Society

After a very brief stint as a freelance writer, I became the WALK coordinator at the North Florida Chapter and have been here ever since.
