A tradition that began when the Landing opened in 1987 continues this year with the 2013 Holiday on the River Dance & Concert Series.
Holiday music and dance performances by more than 80 groups will be presented through Dec. 22 on the stage in the Landing courtyard.
The Sabal Palm Elementary School Chorus opened the show at 11 a.m. Tuesday. The next act, the Mayport Coastal Sciences Middle School Marching Band, warmed up along Independent Drive as soon as band members got off their bus, and then marched into the courtyard before their performance.
Landing General Manager Janice Lowe said it's one of the most popular annual events at Downtown's riverfront retail and restaurant mall. The series also has crossed generations.
"People are always telling me that they performed on the stage at the Landing when they were in school and now they're here watching their children perform," said Lowe.
The series continues today at 11 a.m. when the Pine Castle Chorus takes the stage.
The Englewood High School Sensational Singing Rams are scheduled at 11 a.m. Thursday, followed at 6:15 p.m. by the Crown Point Elementary School chorus. At 7:15 p.m. it's the Nease High School chorus and band and at 8:15 p.m., the Oceanway School of Dance.
The Robert E. Lee Performing Ensemble is scheduled at 11 a.m. Friday, followed at 11:45 by University Christian School; 6:15 p.m., the Young Ladies of Virtue; 7:15 p.m., the Singing Jags from Julington Creek Elementary School; and 8:15 p.m., the Fruit Cove Middle School Jazz Ensemble.
