Southeastern Grocers, the parent company of Winn-Dixie, this morning announced a long-term commitment to health and fitness through the launch of SEG Sports.

The three-pronged initiative was created with an idea to fuel young athletes and their families with the right food to stay active; coach customers who want their children to be more active; and inspire children through partnerships with sports programs.

As part of the roll-out, SEG Sports announced partnerships with several professional teams, including the Jacksonville Suns and Jacksonville Armada, and many college teams, such as the University of Florida and Florida State University.

“We are investing and promoting physical activity and healthy lifestyles through sports at all levels, from gymnastics to football, baseball, basketball and swimming,” said Ian McLeod, Southeastern Grocers president and CEO, in a news release.

In a recent survey, eight out of 10 Southeastern Grocers customers said they would like their children to be more active. The company owns Bi-Lo and Harveys along with Winn-Dixie.

Through SEG Sports, the company will support youth camps and clinics have in communities where its stores serve professional, semi-professional and college sports partnerships.

The grocer will send young, aspiring athletes throughout the Southeast to games with partners, according to the news release.
