Greg Dyer knew he needed to make a change to his real estate investment business when the recession took hold in 2008.
“Those were hard times,” said Dyer. “People were finding themselves in unimaginable situations. I knew that flipping houses wouldn’t be the way I would sustain.”
Relying on his knowledge as a landlord, Dyer began a property management business.
The business provided traditional property management services to landlords in exchange for a monthly management fee.
While his new business endeavor was seeing success, his frustration was mounting.
The lack of tools available to independent landlords made it difficult for anyone who invested in a property to manage it properly.
“The property management software and service providers available mainly focused on the management companies,” stated Dyer. “The independent landlords were left to fend for themselves.”
Knowing there was a better way, Dyer set out to design his own software. He conceptualized TenantTag in 2014.
TenantTag is a mobile and computer app that provides property management assistance and organizational planning for independent landlords.
The app includes ways for tenants to pay rent, make maintenance requests and ask their landlord questions.
The app simplifies property management for independent landlords while improving communication with tenants.
For landlords, maintenance processing can be automated and rent payment is more efficient. For the tenants, the app is all about convenience, allowing them to manage all of their rental related issues through their device.
With a Spark Tank win under his belt, Dyer is capitalizing on the achievement.
Networking with local resources has proven beneficial, adding momentum to the already fast-moving company.
“This is an exciting time for TenantTag,” said Dyer. “The app will be available to the Jacksonville market first. From there, we’re thinking Tallahassee or Gainesville.”
Although still in the beta testing phase, TenantTag aims to be the leading provider of mobile management and communication solutions for the independent landlord market after their launch in the fall.
