Cummer Museum hits first fundraising goal

With $375,000 from trustees and donors, the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens reached the first fundraising goal associated with the 2015 Challenge Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

In order to receive the full $500,000 award, the museum must raise an additional $1.5 million from the community by 2020.

The Cummer was one of 15 institutions selected for the grant from the endowment, an independent federal agency dedicated to supporting research, education, preservation and public programs in the humanities.

The funding will create a $2 million programming endowment that will provide sustained funding for programming, including lectures, workshops, symposia and bringing scholars and artists to Jacksonville.

To participate in the second year of the match or for more information, contact [email protected] or call (904) 899-6025.

Deutsche Bank joins effort to honor teachers

Public school educators in Duval County will be honored at the Jacksonville Jaguars Teacher Appreciation Game on Dec. 24 through a partnership with Deutsche Bank.

As the new Teacher Leadership Partner of the Jacksonville Public Education Fund’s annual EDDY Awards teacher recognition program, the bank will support work to elevate leadership among the city’s best public school educators.

Deutsche Bank joins other local businesses and community organizations that support teachers through the annual Duval County Teacher of the Year program, including Florida Blue, Wells Fargo and the Rotary Clubs of Duval County.

In addition to the EDDY Awards, the education fund works with teachers to bring their voices to the policymaking table through its Teacher Roundtable program and to support classroom innovation through the PowerUP Jax grant program.

This is the first year in which the Jaguars will host a Teacher Appreciation Game.

In addition to the teacher of the year nominees receiving tickets, the 15 district semifinalists will be honored in an on-field presentation at the game.

A list of the 173 teachers of the year is available online at www.jaxpef.org/news.

North Florida Land Trust closing deal on fort

On Nov. 3, North Florida Land Trust plans to close the deal on the purchase of the 1898 Spanish American War Fort.

While the organization still needs to raise about $21,000 to complete the purchase, it is close enough to schedule the closing.

That’s possible through an anonymous donor who has offered to match donations up to $39,000 in order to raise the final money needed to complete the purchase.

The trust has served as the acquisition and fundraising partner of the National Park Service and plans to convey the fort to the federal government.

The property will be added to the Fort Caroline National Memorial as a public access park.

The 1898 Spanish-American War artillery battery fort was one of four forts on St. Johns Bluff that acted in defense of the river and is the only one that remains.

Donations can be made online at northfloridalandtrust.org, or by check marked “Fort” mailed to North Florida Land Trust, 2038 Gilmore St., Jacksonville, 32204.
