Duval

NEFBA’s Government Affairs Committee: The next Government Affairs meeting is 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, at the NEFBA office, 103 Century 21 Drive, Suite 100.

Yes for Jacksonville: Duval County voters supported a plan to pay down the city’s pension debt. Nearly 65 percent of voters approved County Referendum No. 1, which was backed by NEFBA and other community organizations under the title “Yes for Jacksonville.” Currently, there’s a half-cent sales tax in Duval County that funds capital projects and runs through 2030. The referendum allows the tax to run through 2060, with the proceeds in those extended years being used solely for paying down more than $2.8 billion pension debt.

Clay

County budget: The Clay County Commission voted unanimously to support the proposed budget of $286,667,142 for the 2016-17 budget cycle. The vote on the tentative millage rate was 4-1, with Vice Chairman Ronnie Robinson dissenting. The proposed millage rate is set the same as it has been for the past two years at 8.1010.

New county attorney: Clay County appointed Courtney K. Grimm to serve as its new county attorney, effective Sept. 1. She is a graduate of Sweet Briar College and of the University of Florida College of Law. Grimm replaces Mark Scruby, who retired this year.

Sales tax extended: Citizens of Clay County voted overwhelming to support the extension of the one-cent sales tax during the most recent election. With 74 percent of the vote, the NEFBA-supported referendum will extend the current one-cent sales tax that was set to expire Dec. 31, 2019. Since 1990, the tax has generated about $290 million in revenue.
