Olive Garden restaurant provided Labor Day lunch to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Zone 4 employees. The meal included a variety of pasta dishes and salad. The Olive Garden employees wore shirts that said “Green Backs the Blue.” The restaurant is located at 6050 Youngerman Circle.

JTA Gameday Xpress ready for football 

The Jacksonville Transportation Authority is providing its Gameday Xpress shuttle for football season starting Sunday with the Jacksonville Jaguars home opener against the Green Bay Packers.

The shuttle service operates two hours before kickoff and one hour after the game from two Downtown and three suburban locations.

A shuttle service also is available to and from the Prime Osborn Convention Center.

The Downtown stops are at the convention center and Kings Avenue parking garage, with single-game tickets $7 and season passes $51.

The suburban stops are at the Beaches at 277 Penman Road S.; Mandarin at 3011 Marbon Road; and Southside at 7020 Philips Highway. Cost is $12 for a single-game pass, $87 for a season pass.

Job fair coming next week

Job News will host an employment fair from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday at the Prime Osborn Convention Center.

More than two dozen companies will take part, including Advanced Disposal, Citi, First Coast Security, Gate Petroleum, Massey Services, the U.S. Coast Guard and Web.com.

Recruiters and hiring managers will be there to speak with potential employees for a variety of jobs, ranging from accounting and banking to customer service, hospitality and information technology.

Parking and admission are free.

CareerSource Northeast Florida will have its Veteran Mobile Access team there to help update and print resumes, research companies and apply online.

Job seekers should dress professionally and bring resumes.

Future job fairs also will be Oct. 26 and Dec. 7.

Speakers announced for upcoming TEDxFSCJ art event

TEDxFSCJ is partnering with OneVoice and the Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville to host a salon that addresses how modes of art — like painting, poetry and the spoken word — contribute to communities.

Called Art(Re)Defines Us, the event is 6-8 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Downtown museum.

Four panelists who have made contributions to the Jacksonville community will be featured: Tiffany Melanson, Ebony Payne-English, Christina Parrish Stone and Roosevelt Watson III.

The theme is strengthening an ongoing conversation about arts, community and public ideals in Jacksonville’s art scene.

The event is free. Check-in and live music are scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.

JU, Jacksonville Zoo teaming for video magazine

Jacksonville University and the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens have partnered to produce an online digital magazine to explain and illustrate scientific concepts and stories in Northeast Florida.

The video magazine is called “The Science of …” and can be access at thescienceof.ju.edu.

The focus will be to tell scientific stories through a series of videos tied together by a theme.

The first two deal with sea turtle conservation and the natural history of dinosaurs. The sea turtle piece has one 25-minute video, as well as several shorter ones. The dinosaur segment features an eight-minute video with several shorter ones.

Future videos will cover current events, as well as demonstration and “how-to” videos geared toward middle and high school students.

The initiative has been in the works for two years and is funded through a grant via JU’s EPIC initiative, which focuses on science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Open house for FSCJ Broadway series

The Florida State College at Jacksonville Artist Series kicks off its 2016-17 Broadway season with an open house at 4 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts.

It’s the 19th annual open house and will feature food trucks, door prizes, wine tastings and live music.

Attendees also will receive a peek at the upcoming season, with a special performance of “Kinky Boots,” a Tony Award-winning Best Musical, along with seat selection for subscriptions to the upcoming season.

The first 100 people to RSVP to [email protected] will receive a gift when they arrive.

The Broadway season begins Jan. 17-22 with performances of “The Book of Mormon.”

The season also features a Feb. 14-19 run of “Jersey Boys”; March 21-26 performances of “The Little Mermaid”; May 2-7 slate of “Kinky Boots”; and June 13-18 schedule of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “Cinderella.”

Four-show subscriptions start at $137 and vary depending on showtime, day of the week and seating location.

Suns hit several milestones in Babby's first season

The Jacksonville Suns wrapped up season No. 1 under owner Ken Babby over the holiday weekend. It was filled with several milestones for the franchise.

Some season highlights include the largest:

• Opening night crowd, 8,367, since 2007.

• Single crowd, 10,238 on July 3, since 2012.

• Opening series attendance, 26,336, since 2011.

There also were four crowds of more than 6,600 after July 4, compared to one last year and two in 2014.

Despite seven rainouts –– the most since the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville opened in 2003 –– the team averaged a home attendance of 4,197. Last year’s average was 4,128.

Jaguars want pictures of area responders, military for tribute

The Jacksonville Jaguars are seeking photos of local military members and first responders to use as part of a tribute for Sept. 11 during the first home game of the season Sunday.

Photos can be submitted through social media using the hashtag #Jagsalute or emailed to [email protected].

Pictures will be shown on the video boards during a halftime rendition of “God Bless America.” The team is asking the pictures be of military or first responders in uniform.

Concert to commemorate Sept. 11

A collection of singers and performers will lend their talents for a peace concert to commemorate Sept. 11 on Sunday.

Participants include Cliff Newton, the Douglas Anderson Chorale, Jacksonville Children’s Chorus, Paula Merritt, Tim Tuller and the University of North Florida Chamber Singers.

The Jacksonville Sister Cities Association, OneJax at UNF and UNF Flagship Program are partnering to present the concert, which will coincide with 2,000 similar concerts held worldwide.

The free event will be at 6 p.m. at St. John’s Cathedral, 256 E. Church St..
