Builder Care is focused on assisting disabled, elderly and low-income homeowners with critical home repairs, water intrusion problems and gaining access to their homes.
In other words, a majority of Builders Care’s work is fixing roofs and building ramps.
Keeping foster family together
Harlan Bost, of Florida Custom Marble and NEFBA’s third vice president, has been a longtime supporter of Builders Care.
When he was president of the Southside Rotary Club, Builders Care was the club’s focus for charitable giving.
The current Rotary president, Jim Lanahan, is a Guardian ad Litem working with a family in need of support, so he reached out to Bost, who in turn, reached out to Builders Care.
The family includes Sandra Williams, a single mother who has opened her home to children in need.
Williams’ roof had a severe leak that allowed water to enter her kitchen. With limited funds, she did not know where to begin to find help getting the roof fixed.
Lanahan was concerned if she could not get the roof patched and the hole in the ceiling fixed, the four foster children in her home would be removed.
As a Guardian ad Litem, Lanahan was extremely concerned if that were to happen, the children would lose the stability and support they had with Williams. He was concerned if they were separated from this family, the results could be devastating.
Builders Care was able to assess the home’s roof and interior rooms. Within a week, the leak in the roof and kitchen ceiling were repaired.
A family faced possible separation because of a roof leak. Builders Care fixed the roof and restored the family’s security.
That’s what Builders Care does.
Quest for help ends with happy tears
Ruby Brobeck had been trying for a long time to get a wheelchair ramp built for her husband.
The contractors who gave her quotes were always far too expensive, well beyond what they could afford given their medical expenses.
Her husband suffers from Crohn’s disease, bladder cancer, heart disease and has had seven stents.
It was almost impossible for him to get up the three steps into their home and Brobeck herself had recently had a second shoulder surgery that was still in the healing stage.
She had difficulty getting her husband’s wheelchair in and out of the car, so the stairs presented a major obstacle.
Builders Care partnered with Southern Dynasty and began by having the lumber delivered. Brobeck was hesitant to sign for the lumber because it was hard for her to believe the ramp would soon be a reality.
After a call to the Builders Care office so Justin Brown, Builders Care executive director, could reassure Brobeck, the lumber was unloaded.
Emotionally exhausted after struggling with the limitations on the couple’s mobility and failed attempts to get help, Brobeck began to cry.
She waited to tell her husband about the ramp until it was time to bring him home for the weekend. When they pulled in the driveway, he couldn’t believe his eyes, he was simply in awe.
The couple made a donation to Builders Care in appreciation and to “pay it forward.”
Brobeck said she wanted to shout her thanks to Builders Care from the rooftops.
After two years of seeking help, Brobeck had all but lost hope. Builders Care came to her rescue.
That’s what Builders Care does.
