Duval

NEFBA’s Government Affairs Committee: The next Government Affairs meeting is 8:30 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 23, at the NEFBA offices (103 Century 21 Drive, Suite 100).

Atlantic Beach: The city of Atlantic Beach has seen several major changes to its staff recently with the departure of City Planner Andrew DeCandis and City Manager Nelson Van Liere. Atlantic Beach also is without a police chief, after the former chief took a job with Winter Park.

Clay

Comprehensive plan review: Clay County is reviewing the county’s 2025 Comprehensive Plan to update it for the next 25 years. Public input is being sought through an online survey and a series of public meetings. The survey and meeting locations can be found at claycountygov.com.

St. Johns

School Choice: St. Johns County has begun to prepare for out-of-county student applications thanks to last year’s HB 7029 School Choice bill. The bill was passed by the Florida Legislature with the intent of allowing students in Florida to attend any school of their choice. The application window begins Feb. 13 and continues through March 10, with separate lotteries for in- and out-of-county residents. Out-of-county applicants will be considered only if there are remaining seats after the in-county lottery.

Baker

Nassau

Urban density: The Fernandina Beach City Commission approved a density increase for the Central Business District on first reading with a unanimous vote. After months of study by city staff, a recommendation from the Planning Advisory Board and public input, commissioners voted to approve Ordinance 2017-2, a comprehensive plan amendment to increase downtown residential density from eight dwelling units per acre to 34 units per acre. The ordinance will be submitted to the state for comment and approval.
