Amazon.com has canceled next week’s job fairs scheduled at the Prime Osborn Convention Center because of the strong attendance at this week’s events.

The company still will hold a job fair Friday at the Legends Center at 5130 Soutel Drive in Northwest Jacksonville. It will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Amazon spokeswoman Shevaun Brown said the decision was based on the “overwhelming response” at the first two job fairs Monday and Wednesday.

Hundreds of applicants waited hours to apply in person at the Legends Center. Amazon has not released the number of candidates who attended.

Amazon had scheduled three job fairs next week at the convention center.

Amazon is hiring about 1,500 people to staff a 2.4 million-square-foot fulfillment center at 12900 Pecan Park Road in Northwest Jacksonville.

It will be the first fulfilment center in Jacksonville and will handle small consumer items.

Amazon expects the facility to open about September.

The online retailer is hiring full- and part-time positions for the warehouse that range in pay from $12 to $16 an hour, as well as management and operations jobs.

The e-commerce giant also is building a West Jacksonville fulfillment center at 13333 103rd St. in Cecil Commerce Center to handle large consumer items, as well as a sortation center in Westside Industrial Park.

Amazon has not announced job fairs for the Cecil center.
