Another chain entering the Jacksonville market is doing so at The Strand at Town Center.
Grub Burger Bar will open early in the first quarter in an end unit of one of the larger retail strips under construction along Town Center Parkway, pending approval of a building permit.
Marketing Vice President Kelly Weller said Thursday the company typically hires about 50 people.
The restaurant will be company owned.
“It’s a great market,” Weller said, explaining the company sees Jacksonville as a good local community. She said Grub Burger Bar hopes to open more locations in North Florida.
The Bryan, Texas-based company’s first Florida store is in Tallahassee.
Grub Burger Bar’s menu includes burgers, sides, salads and bowls, sandwiches and tenders, snacks, drinks and full bar.
Burgers include the Guacapotle, Mac ‘N’ Cheeseburger, Voo Doo Mushroom, Scorpion and others.
Building plans show that Grub Burger Bar will seat 117 diners inside and 38 on a patio. The indoor seating includes 19 at the bar.
Grub Burger Bar operates 18 restaurants in seven states – California, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Pennsylvania and Texas. It opened in March 2012.
The company was founded by Jimmy Loup and Tom Kenney. Grubburgerbar.com says its name stands for good people, real food, unique vibe and big flavors.
The city is reviewing a $650,000 build-out for the restaurant. No contractor is specified.
The Strand and The Crossing at Town Center are the sites for several businesses and restaurants that are new to Jacksonville.
Those include Chuy’s, Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen, Texas de Brazil, Firebirds Wood Fired Grill, PGA Tour Superstore, the 2nd & Charles used-media store, Goo-Goo Express Wash and others.
The Strand and The Crossing are south of Town Center Promenade, which also features stores and restaurants new to the area.
TD Ameritrade awaits build-out for its new offices at The Strand at Town Center. No contractor is specified for the $450,000 project to prepare 4,333 square feet of space for TD Ameritrade at 4888 Town Center Parkway. TD Ameritrade said last year it expects to open the branch in winter 2018.
Gate Petroleum Co. landed a permit Wednesday to build out and expand space at 9100 Philips Highway for its “Gate University” to train new employees.
FLC Contracting LLC is the contractor for the $997,800 project to renovate and expand the training center.
Spokeswoman Misty Skipper said previously the space will be dedicated for training, “a critical component of our business to ensure our employees provide excellent customer service.”
The building-permit application shows space among two floors. Duval County property records show the roughly 25,000-square-foot building is owned by Gate Fuel Service Inc.
Gate will use at least 5,500 square feet for the center, while existing tenant Stonecore will remain in the space it leases.
Most of the Gate renovations will be on the second floor. Plans show two training rooms, a multipurpose room, a break room, work room, offices for the director and manager, and a mock-up store.
The mock-up store will offer training, including for lottery machines and the fuel-dispensing station.
The contractor will demolish the interior of the second floor to build the training center. There also will be a two-story addition with stairs, an elevator and two multipurpose rooms providing access to the center.
Skipper said employees previously were trained in a dedicated center that has since been converted into a warehouse. After that, Gate trained employees in conference rooms in corporate headquarters at 9540 San Jose Blvd.
Current employees will take ongoing training at the center.
The city approved construction Wednesday of two Wawa gas stations and convenience stores at EastPark and OakLeaf Corner.
Both are $1.1 million projects comprising a 6,119-square-foot convenience store, gas canopy and dumpster enclosure.
The EastPark store is at 11812 Beach Blvd. and the OakLeaf address is 8251 Old Middleburg Road.
Carl R. Pursell Construction LLC is the contractor.
Pet Supermarket is adding another location, this time in Southwest Jacksonville at Collins Road.
The project would be the eighth – doubling the number of Pet Supermarkets now operating in Duval County.
The pet supplies chain has four stores in Jacksonville and Jacksonville Beach; two more planned or under construction at Landmark Station and Southside Square; and one scheduled to open Saturday in Village Commons at 4490 Southside Blvd.
What could be the eighth is in for permitting at 7067 Collins Road, No. 301, in Collins Plaza. Gatlin Development Co. is the developer.
No contractor is specified for the $422,500 build-out of 6,500 square feet of space.
Pet Supermarkets are smaller than the average Petco and PetSmart stores.
Site plans were filed for Holiday Inn Express at 13934 Village Lake Court in Bartram Park.
The four-story, 90-room, 55,000-square-foot hotel and a pool are planned on 1.6 acres.
It’s at Interstate 95 and Old St. Augustine Road.
