In case there was any doubt what Amazon.com was planning at Westside Industrial Park, a permit application shows the e-commerce retailer will sort small packages there.
That application requests approval for a $2.3 million conveyor system at the center at 4948 Bulls Bay Highway. The permit describes the project as “provide and install a manual sort and conveyor system for small packages.”
Hickman Homes Inc. of Lakeland is the contractor.
Seattle-based Amazon hasn’t announced the sortation center, or a delivery station being built-out in North Jacksonville.
It has announced its two major fulfillment centers under construction for small packages in Northwest Jacksonville and large items in West Jacksonville.
According to the MWPVL International logistics consulting company, Amazon’s sortation centers take shipments from large fulfillment centers.
They sort the goods by ZIP codes within a defined market region around the center and then take the goods to the U.S. Postal Service or local couriers for delivery.
The city has been reviewing a permit for office improvements for Amazon at the 237,053-square-foot Westside Industrial Park building.
Previously issued permits include structural support for roof-top units, dock-door details and trenching for utilities, and for electrical, lighting, power and construction trailers.
The permit application Tuesday is the first to confirm it is a sortation center, although the specifications matched the description of one.
A zoning application, which did not identify Amazon, said the building’s user was expected to create more than 200 jobs and represent a capital investment exceeding $5 million.
So far, permits at the Westside building show about $4 million in work for the center.
The building is owned by a company related to Pattillo Industrial Real Estate. It was developed on 14.87 acres.
