Pajcic Yard golf benefits Jacksonville Area Legal Aid
The fifth annual Pajcic & Pajcic Yard Golf event to benefit Jacksonville Area Legal Aid is 3-8 p.m. Saturday at the Riverside and Avondale homes of Steve and Anne Pajcic and Michael Pajcic and Katy Debriere.
Participants can tee off at the Yard Course at 1917 Montgomery Place or at the Back Nine at 3900 Richmond St.
The Law Firm of Pajcic & Pajcic sponsors the family oriented event that includes 18 holes of yard golf, food, beverages, bounce houses and celebrity sightings. This year, some members of the Jacksonville Jaguars are scheduled to attend.
One of the holes is teed off from Steve and Anne Pajcic’s dock, with the chance to win $6,000 with a hole-in-one.
Entry fees are $25 to $100 per person, and the law firm matches 100 percent of registrations, sponsorships, donations and the dock shot prize with a contribution to Jacksonville Area Legal Aid.
Last year, the event raised nearly $50,000 to provide legal services for those who cannot afford to be represented by a private attorney in a civil matter.

Gate brings in $62,000 to aid Down groups
The Gate Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Jacksonville-based Gate Petroleum Co., raised a $62,000 in donations for the Down syndrome organizations including Down Syndrome Association of Jacksonville through the Buddy Star Campaign.
During April, Gate customers were able to purchase a star for $1 and add their name in support of the effort.
Debbie Revels, executive director of Down Syndrome Association of Jacksonville, said the donations will benefit more than 650 children, adults and their families.
The money helps more than 30 programs and services, including family social groups that meet monthly.
The association also provides families with therapy funding assistance.
The three-week fundraising campaign was held at all Gate convenience stores in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. All funds collected will be donated to the nearest Down syndrome association.
Customers of the Gate store at 4123 Town Center Parkway in Jacksonville and 1460 Bowen Mills Road in Douglas, Ga., raised the most money as a percentage of in-store sales.

Tennis tourney raises money for Firehouse foundation
The 43rd annual Firehouse Subs Men’s Doubles Tennis Tournament is Friday-Sunday at Jacksonville Golf & Country Club.
It’s the largest men’s doubles amateur tennis tournament in Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia.
This year’s beneficiary is the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation, which provides money, life-saving equipment and educational opportunities for first responders and public safety organizations.
Beginning at 8 a.m. Friday, contenders in the open division will compete for a portion of the $12,500 cash pot, thanks to event sponsor AlphaStaff.
Families can enjoy Saturday’s free activities, including tennis matches, food, a silent auction and carnival atmosphere for children.
Hot Firehouse subs will be served daily and all proceeds will benefit the foundation. Activities are made possible by sponsors Dakota Provisions and The Main Street America Group.
The Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation has given more than $25 million to hometown heroes in 46 states, Puerto Rico and Canada, including more than $4.3 million in Florida, $1.9 million of which has been awarded in Northeast Florida.
Fish Fry to benefit the North Florida Land Trust
The sixth annual Fish Fry to benefit the North Florida Land Trust is noon-5 p.m. Saturday at Big Talbot Island.
The nonprofit is offering free guided nature walks led by a Florida master naturalist during the event. Guests will learn about the natural habitats and the plants and animals that live in the maritime forest overlooking the salt marsh on the island.
The naturalist will conduct three tours, with groups limited to 15. The tours will leave at 12:30 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. and will take guests on a 1.5-mile hike.
The tours are popular and it is recommended that people sign up in advance when they purchase tickets to the event. Visit northfloridalandtrust.org/events/fishfry/ for tickets and to register for a walk.
Tickets are $30 in advance or $40 at the door and include entry and the meal. Children under 12 pay $10 in advance or $20 at the door and students with ID pay $15 in advance and $25 at the door. The event will go on rain or shine with no refunds.

‘Raising a Reader’ brings books
The Early Learning Coalition of Duval County has set up a “Raising a Reader” and “Parent Café” program at Washington Heights and Cleveland Arms apartments.
Besides being able to check out books on a weekly basis, free lunch is provided. Children can take part in educational activities while their parents participate in “Parent Café” networking sessions.
Primary funding for the program comes from the Jacksonville Journey Early Learning Program.
