Wawa, which plans a grand opening Dec. 13 for its first two Jacksonville stores, has been identified on plans for what appears to be its 17th Northeast Florida location.

Wawa plans a ribbon-cutting at 9 a.m. at 6787 Wilson Blvd. in Jacksonville and at 1 p.m. at 678 Blanding Blvd. in Orange Park.

It also will open soon at 4866 Gate Parkway in The Crossing at Town Center.

In April, Wawa ceremonially broke ground on that store and one along Blanding Boulevard.

The company said it expected to open its first three stores by year-end, including The Crossing location, but it has not confirmed the Crossing date.

The company said it would open 10 more area stores in 2018, including three in the spring and two in the summer.

Its goal is 40 stores over five years in the market.

As it opens the first stores, the Pennsylvania-based chain continues to develop more gas stations and convenience stores in Duval, Clay and St. Johns counties.

A 17th area site has been identified for Wawa at northwest Normandy Boulevard and Cassat Avenue in West Jacksonville.

Applications for Mobility Fee Calculation and Concurrency Reservation certificates show Wawa wants to build a 5,943-square-foot store with 12 fueling positions on 1.5 acres.

Sam’s Club adding more self-checkout registers

Sam’s Club is adding more self-checkout registers at its area clubs at 300 Busch Drive and 6373 Youngerman Circle.

“Self-checkout is a convenience for our members and many prefer to use this option as well as our Scan & Go app, which allows them to check out using their mobile phone,” said Amy Wyatt-Moore, senior manager of corporate communications with Sam’s Club, which is owned by Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

She said there are no plans for additional self-checkouts at the Beach Boulevard Sam’s Club, which has four self-checkout registers.

“All three clubs will continue to have a combination of both staffed registers and self-checkout registers to give members options and ensure they have a great checkout experience,” Wyatt-Moore said in an email.

Pending building permits show that Sam’s Club will replace some of its staffed registers with the self-checkouts at the two Jacksonville locations. The cost is $31,000 for each store.
