Old Dominion Freight Line Inc. continues its West Jacksonville expansion.

The company, based in Thomasville, North Carolina, applied to the city to build a 28-door dock addition at its 720 Scotia Road terminal.

The project is described as a 12,892-square-foot pre-engineered metal building. D.F. Chase Contractors of Nashville is the contractor for the $1.33 million project.

Prosser Inc. is the civil engineer.

Old Dominion secured permits since July for $2.05 million in renovations and remodeling of the terminal and office buildings, a fire alarm system, a fire prevention system and roofing.

The latest permit boosts the investment to $3.38 million. The existing facility comprises about 32,095 square feet.

The office renovation was approved Aug. 24.

Old Dominion also applied for a zoning administrative deviation to increase parking from 23 to 67 spaces and to change landscape requirements.

That request, which was approved, said about 25 full-time employees along with drivers and operators work during typical shifts.

The facility will operate a truck terminal cross-dock facility and accommodate drivers and operators as well as distribution and office employees.

The property was developed in 1968, according to Duval County property records. Old Dominion bought it in 1993 for $575,000.

Records show it is assessed at $715,301 for tax purposes. It is a 6.13-acre site.

Old Dominion describes itself as a leading, less-than-truckload, union-free motor carrier providing regional, interregional and national services, which include ground and air-expedited transportation and consumer household pickup and delivery through a single integrated organization.

It also offers truckload brokerage, supply chain consulting and warehousing.

An Old Dominion spokesman could not be reached for comment.
