This year’s class will mark the 44th year for the local homebuilder training program.
“There is a lot of excitement surrounding the large increase in enrollment for this year’s program,” said Christina Thomas, training director. “Last year we welcomed 235 students on the first day for all four years in all four trades within the program. This September, nearly 350 apprentices entered the classrooms. This reflects a nearly 50 percent increase in enrollment in one year.”
The apprenticeship program classes for electricians, HVAC technicians and plumbers began Sept. 6 at Keiser University, NEFBA’s educational training partner. Carpentry applications are still being accepted with classes beginning at Ridgeview High School and Middleburg High School.
“We are also piloting a new carpentry class at the Keiser campus in Duval County,” said Keith Ward, NEFBA Training vice president. “This is the first step in a strategic plan to revitalize the program to meet the drastic demand in the area for skilled carpenters.”
