Wawa, with 13 identified sites in Duval and Clay counties, added a 14th at northeast Blanding Boulevard and Collins Road.

The site for the gas station and convenience store is in southwest Jacksonville at 7911 Blanding Blvd., north of Interstate 295.

Landowners are seeking approval from the St. Johns River Water Management District and an administrative deviation from the city that includes increasing the number of off-street parking spaces from 34 to 57 and that reduces landscape requirements.

Wawa proposes a 5,636-square-foot convenience store on the almost 2.5-acre site that now includes a gas station, food store, restaurant and other structures.

The property is owned by three entities.

The zoning administrator has 21 days to write a final order approving or denying the application. If approved and not appealed, the project could move into permitting.

Wawa expects to open three stores by year-end at The Crossing at Town Center and Wilson Boulevard and Lane Avenue in Jacksonville and at Blanding Boulevard and Filmore Street in Clay County.

In addition to three Clay County sites, Wawa has been identified at 10 Jacksonville locations. It also is scouting property in St. Johns County.

The Pennsylvania-based company intends to develop up to 40 area stores.

Wal-Mart Market OK’d in Baymeadows

The Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market in Baymeadows was OK’d for construction Friday. The city issued a permit for International Contractors Inc. of Illinois to build the 40,545-square-foot grocery store at 9550 Baymeadows Road in the Baymeadows Commons shopping center at a job cost of $5 million.

Site work was approved in April. The store will be built where Bailey’s Powerhouse Gym had operated before relocating nearby. There also will be 1,406 square feet of unenclosed space.
