Not only is Walmart Inc. adding pickup services for online grocery and merchandise orders, it also appears to be rebranding its look.
“This new branding is being adopted on stores all across the country,” says a written description filed with the city.
Walmart continues to compete with online retailer Amazon.com and other retailers in recruiting customers to its website and into its stores.
Walmart Stores East LP is asking the Jacksonville Planning Commission for a minor modification at its 8808 Beach Blvd. Supercenter that includes architectural design and signage.
In response to an emailed question about it, Walmart said there would be more to share soon, but declined details.
The written description filed with the application explains that the new Supercenter design incorporates “architectural elements dramatically different from the traditional ‘big box’ design.”
The description says the final design of the building will substantially conform to attached drawings.
It explains that Walmart’s new prototypical color palette includes Sherwin Williams colors Gauntlet Gray, Medium Walmart Blue, Knockout Orange, Repose Gray and Dorian Gray.
The signage will meet or exceed the city’s minimum requirement in the zoning district, the description says.
Primary signage will consist of two externally illuminated monument signs on either end of the northern part of the site next to Beach Boulevard.
Signs now in use are not illuminated. Walmart would like to update both monument signs to be internally illuminated channel letter signs. The size and structure would be unaffected.
The monument sign structures would be painted with the new colors to match the building.Sign exhibits also were attached to the filing.
The application is scheduled at the April 19 commission hearing.PB2 Architecture + Engineering of Rogers, Arkansas, is the applicant.
Walmart requests a minor modification to amend development standards and design guidelines to allow the monument signs to be internally illuminated and to update the exterior colors to the new prototypical palette.
The 206,000-square-foot Supercenter was built in 2004.Interior work also is underway.On Thursday, the city approved a $930,285 renovation project of for the Beach Boulevard store. Retail Contractors of PR Inc. is the contractor.
Improvements include an electronics department with interactive displays, a pharmacy with additional service lanes and a new consultation room, an improved produce department layout, updated self-checkout stations, a larger assortment of industrial and power tools and wider aisles and lower fixtures to improve customers’ line of sight along with an improved store flow.
Pura Bean Holdings Inc. can build-out in the Riverside area now that the city approved the permit.
McAneny Builders LLC will convert 900 square feet of commercial space at 915 King St. for a Pura Bean coffee shop at a build-out cost of $35,000, the permit shows.
Pura Bean President Chris Diedrich said in February he estimated build-out by July at a cost of at least $60,000.
He opened his first Pura Bean shop at 14286 Beach Blvd. in July 2016.
IberiaBank issued a $7.5 million mortgage to Sky Entertainment Jacksonville LLC for development of the iFly Indoor Skydiving center along Brightman Boulevard near St. Johns Town Center.IberiaBank in Lafayette, Louisiana, issued the mortgage March 16.
The city is reviewing permits for site work and construction of the foundation and building on 1.14 acres at 10579 Brightman Blvd., south of Topgolf.
Sky Entertainment paid $738,644 for the site Jan. 10. Construction costs and the land purchase total almost $9 million.
The city issued a permit for The Angelo Group Inc. to build-out 1,511 square feet of space for the Full Psycle indoor cycling studio in Harbour Village at 13475 Atlantic Blvd., next to Retro Fitness.

The build-out cost is $286,223. The shopping center is anchored by Stein Mart and The Fresh Market.
