Target will be introducing its “reimagined” concept in Jacksonville at its Southside Boulevard store now that the city approved the construction permit.

Target Corp.’s construction cost to remodel its Southside Square store is $1.76 million, up from the $1.1 million anticipated on the building-permit application filed in January.

The city approved the permit Friday for Fulcrum Express Inc. of Atlanta to remodel the interior of the store and the façade at 9041 Southside Blvd.

Target spokeswoman Liz Hancock said Monday the remodeling would be completed this summer.

The Target at 10490 San Jose Blvd. is in city review for a $1.1 million interior remodeling for the new look.

Elements include:

• Enhanced merchandise presentations throughout the store, including updated décor, modern fixtures, mannequins and specialty lighting.

• An updated order pickup and guest service counter to provide “an easier and faster experience for guests picking up online orders.”

• A specialty beauty environment that “invites guests to shop,” including new fixtures and enhanced lighting and layout.

• A new Starbucks location.

“The reimagined stores will feature Target’s most ambitious store redesign to date, featuring modernized design elements and bringing more technology and digital experiences to our stores to give guests an experience that’s easy and inspiring,” Hancock said in a statement.

She said that across the country, Target will choose elements to create customized concepts to meet the needs of local customers.

Hancock said Target plans to fully renovate more than 300 stores annually over the next few years.

The city also is reviewing a permit to review the Mandarin Target in the Courtyard Shopping Center.

Hancock said that store will also be renovated, but work has not started and she had no additional details.

The Targets will be two of more than 1,000 stores the Minneapolis-based chain will update and renovate by 2020.

Hancock said in January that Target remodeled 110 stores in 2017 and plans to renovate more than 325 locations in 2018, including some in Florida.

She did not say whether other Jacksonville-area Target stores will be remodeled.

The Southside store is 115,231 square feet in size. The Mandarin store at 10490 San Jose Blvd. is in city review for a $1.1 million interior remodeling that would involve 70,000 square feet of the 138,286-square-foot store.

Corporate.target.com reports it is undertaking a remodeling program it calls the next generation of store design.

Target operates more than 1,800 stores. It said that by the end of 2019, more than one-third of its stores will be remodeled as part of its more than $7 billion investment.

The eight Target stores in Duval County were built from 1991 to 2007.

The Southside Square and 444 Monument Road locations were built first, according to Duval County property records. The San Jose store was built in 2000.
