This is the last Monday edition of the Daily Record devoted to news about the Jacksonville legal community.
Clarification and full disclosure: It’s not going away, it’s just moving.
Beginning Sept. 6, local Bar news will be published each Thursday in the Jacksonville Daily Record. It will be business as usual, delivered to subscribers, including members of the Jacksonville Bar Association, and available to those who purchase their copy from the familiar red newspaper boxes.
The Bar’s news also will be published in the Jacksonville Record & Observer, our free weekly publication that’s distributed each Thursday at about 60 rack locations in Duval County.
In the 12 weeks since the Record & Observer debuted, it’s already developed a strong following among people who want to have the inside track when it comes to the who, what and why in business, government and real estate development news.
As of Sept. 6, they’ll also be plugged-in each week to the accomplishments, contributions and personalities of Jacksonville’s bench and Bar. That includes the JBA’s monthly Bar Bulletin, which will continue to be published the first Thursday of each month.
And those of you who have been receiving the Monday edition will get a wider range of news, on a different day of the week.

On Thursday, the 4th Circuit Judicial Nominating Commission convened for the first time with its three new members, Karen Bowling, Courtney Grimm and Helen Roberson.

The public meeting was called to familiarize the new members regarding the commission’s responsibilities, policies and procedures. Also, the group voted to re-elect Kilbane as chair for a one-year term and Brown was elected vice chair.
The Jacksonville Women Lawyers Association will host a reception 5:30-7:30 p.m. Sept. 6 at River City Brewing Co. on the Southbank. Beverages and light appetizers will be served.
It’s an opportunity to meet the board members, network with attorneys and learn about the programs and events the organization has planned for the 2018-19 Bar year.
Admission is free for members, $25 for nonmembers. Membership will be available at the door.
In gathering information about the history of The Florida Bar, some important documents are missing, some of which may be in the possession of members or law school libraries.
Before The Florida Bar, from 1901 to 1949 there was the Florida State Bar Association. It convened annually and published a report after each meeting.
The documents in question were distributed from 1910 to 1918 and are titled, “Proceedings of the Florida State Bar Association.”

The lawyers and judges of the U.S. District Court, Middle District of Florida, through the Middle District Bench Bar Fund and the Jacksonville Chapter of the Federal Bar Association are sponsoring an essay contest for students.
Students in grades 10 through 12 in Baker, Bradford, Clay, Columbia, Duval, Flagler, Hamilton, Nassau, Putnam, St. Johns, Suwannee and Union counties may participate in the 2018 High School Essay Contest.
This year’s theme is the 150th anniversary of ratification of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution:
“All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside. No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”
First place prize is $2,000; second place, $1,000; and third place, $500.
Entries must be submitted by noon Oct. 15.

Winners will be recognized at a ceremony Nov. 15 at the Bryan Simpson U.S. Courthouse and at a luncheon at The River Club on Dec. 6. The first-place winner also will be invited to shadow a judge for a day.
The D.W. Perkins Bar Association will have its first business and organizational meeting of the 2018-19 Bar year at noon Sept. 6 at The River Club.
