Cornerstone Christian School of Jacksonville is under contract to buy the former YMCA property at 8301 Fort Caroline Road to use as a sports complex for its students.
Donald Corley, chief financial officer and director of school operations, said the sale could be completed at the end of the month.
“We have been looking for a gym near our existing campus for several months. When this property became available, it matched our needs perfectly,” Corley said.
Cornerstone of Jacksonville Inc. applied for a Certificate of Use for the property. The school is based at 9039 Beach Blvd., a 3-acre property with a 31,500-square-foot building.
The former YMCA property comprises 18,176 square feet of gymnasium and club space on 7.36 acres, property records show.
The private Cornerstone Christian School of Jacksonville was established in 2002. The nondenominational Christian school serves more than 380 students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grades, according to its website.
Corley said Cornerstone Christian School is waiting for final inspection reports before it completes its budget and plans for the property.
He said the school anticipates an investment of $1.25 million to $1.4 million.
The YMCA of Florida’s First Coast closed the two locations of its Arlington branch Jan. 1 citing increasing costs and declining participation. It owns the Fort Caroline location and leased the 10131 Atlantic Blvd. site.
Michelle Moore, senior vice president and chief membership and marketing officer of the YMCA of Florida’s First Coast, confirmed the contract, but declined details.
“The First Coast YMCA is committed to ensuring that its Ft. Caroline location is utilized in a way that best serves the community. There is a contract for purchase on the property. Due to the YMCA’s policy, we are unable to release details until the transaction is finalized,” she said in an emailed statement.
The Y announced in November it would close the Arlington Family YMCA’s two locations.
The youth basketball league at the Arlington Family YMCA will complete its seasonal schedule through February. Members can use other YMCA locations in Northeast Florida as part of the First Coast membership.
Classes and programs are offered at the Brooks Family, Winston Family, and Johnson Family YMCAs and the YMCA at Baptist North.
• The city issued permits for CSX Corp. and CSX Transportation to renovate space at their Downtown headquarters. CSX Corp. was OK’d to renovate 12,709 square feet of its second-floor coffee shop, sundry shop, kitchen and dining area at 500 Water St. at a cost of $717,960. Auld & White Constructors LLC is the contractor. CSX Transportation was approved for ninth-floor interior renovations at 550 Water St. Duckworth Construction Co. is the contractor.
• BFC Property Holdings Inc., a Gate Petroleum Co. entity, bought property in OakLeaf Corner for a Gate Express Car Wash. Gate paid $1.5 million for about an acre at the northeast corner of Old Middleburg Road South and Argyle Forest Boulevard. Oakleaf Corner, at 8251 Old Middleburg Road S., also is targeted for a Wawa gas station and convenience store and an Aldi grocery store along with three more outparcels.
• Walmart intends to remodel its Supercenter in Mandarin at 10991 San Jose Blvd. No contractor is listed for the $500,000 project at the Mandarin Corners shopping center.
Bagels R Us intends to open at 11629 San Jose Blvd. N., No. 1, in Mandarin Place by the end of February or early March. Emerald C’s Development Inc. is the contractor for the 1,313-square-foot build-out at a cost of $127,722. Hota Design Studios LLC is the architect.
The other Bagels R Us location is at 14185 Beach Blvd. No. 4. Hours there are 6:15 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and 7 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday. It is closed Monday. The restaurant bakes bagels and makes cream cheese daily.
The city and the St. Johns River Water Management District are reviewing an application for a free-standing emergency room for Orange Park Medical Center on 1.7 acres at 5773 Normandy Blvd. in Duval County.
S&ME Inc. of Orlando is the engineering consultant.
Construction documents show a proposed 10,860-square-foot medical clinic at the address as 5773 Verna Blvd off Normancy Boulevard.
