FedEx Ground Package System intends to tap into new energy by adding solar panels to the roof of its Cecil Commerce Center distribution center.
The city is reviewing a permit application for SoCore Energy to add a photovoltaic solar array to the FedEx roof at 13509 Waterworks St. at a cost of almost $1.51 million.
“FedEx Ground adds solar capacity to its network where feasible,” said a statement from the company.
It said it does not publicly discuss project specifics until details are completed.
FedEx Ground, based near Pittsburgh, is a subsidiary of Memphis-based FedEx Corp.
A calculation report with the permit application states Chicago-based SoCore Energy will install 3,990 modules from Trina Solar.
It appears to be an almost 1.3 megawatt system.
The size is similar to the almost 1.4 megawatt system that went online at FedEx’s North Texas hub in 2014.
That system has about 4,600 solar panels that produce enough power to offset 20 percent of the building’s annual electricity consumption. That’s equal to about 177 homes.
At that time, FedEx ground facility hubs in Woodbridge, New Jersey; Queens, New York; and Rialto, California; also had solar systems.
SoCore Energy installed, owns and maintains the solar system at the Dallas hub, which has other green initiatives too, said GreensourceDFW.org.
Permit documents show the FedEx Jacksonville array will cover 119,700 square feet of the 294,680-square-foot roof area.
The almost 300,000-square-foot building was developed in 2014 by SunCap Jacksonville LLC for lease to FedEx Ground Package System Inc.
SunCap sold the 46-acre property in February 2015 to Monmouth Real Estate Investment Corp. of Freehold, New Jersey, for $30.65 million.
The center is in AllianceFlorida at Cecil Commerce Center.
