Another grocery store appears to be headed to Northwest Jacksonville.

Save-A-Lot Food Stores intends to open in The Shoppes of Norfolk at Soutel Drive and Norfolk Boulevard, according to building plans.

The city is reviewing a permit application for a $575,000 build-out of 14,500 square feet of space at the 4750 Soutel Drive property.

Plans show a renovation of vacant tenant space on one end of the center that is anchored by Family Dollar on the other.

The 52,500-square-foot shopping center was developed in 1964 on 4.21 acres.

No contractor is listed. PB2 Architecture & Engineering of Rogers, Arkansas, is the architect.

The property is owned by Jacksonville Plaza 1, which bought the property in 2015.

Save-A-Lot operates 11 stores in Jacksonville, including three more in Northwest Jacksonville. It also has stores in Orange Park and St. Augustine.

A Save-A-Lot spokesman did not return emails or phone calls.

Earth City, Missouri-based Save-A-Lot said it is a hard discount grocery that offers savings up to 40 percent on its limited assortment.

Earth City is in the St. Louis area.

It operates more than 1,300  locations, including corporate-owned and independent grocery stores.

Progressive Grocer reported Oct. 8 that Save-A-Lot has begun a brand transformation expected to be completed in 2019, starting with a $100 million investment in cutting prices.

It said Save-A-Lot began dropping prices by up to 40 percent on hundreds of everyday items across its store network, calling the initiative a "permanent reset" of its prices.
