The Appellate Practice Section, nominally a “committee” of the Litigation Section of the Jacksonville Bar Association (whose members bristle under this anachronistic yoke of oppression), comprises approximately 50 members whose primary practice area or interest is appellate practice.

The APS traditionally holds quarterly luncheons at the Whiteway Deli in Riverside and sponsors or co-sponsors several events during the year.

On June 24, APS sponsored a “Lunch and Learn” seminar with the 1st District Court of Appeal that provided significant CLE credits for attendees (including the elusive ethics and technology credits) as well as an engaging and energetic exchange between 1st DCA Judges Scott Makar, Harvey Jay, Ross Bilbrey, Stephanie Ray and the attendees.

Topics covered a range of practice issues as well as the judges’ perspective on effective appellate advocacy.

On Sept. 27, APS and the Jacksonville Chapter of the Federal Bar Association will co-sponsor a reception at the State Attorney’s Office for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit, who will be holding oral arguments here in Jacksonville.

For the past several years, these receptions have been at the home of Judge Makar and his wife, Nancy Hogshead-Makar.

Dates and times for upcoming receptions will be announced via the JBA newsletter after the remainder of the 1st DCA’s oral argument calendar is finalized.

APS also will continue its quarterly luncheons, which are productive gatherings for an exchange of ideas, questions and sharing of “war stories.”
