Spartina 449, a South Carolina-based coastal-themed clothing and accessories company, intends to open in October in St. Johns Town Center.
Marketing and Communications Manager Jessica Maples said it will be Spartina 449’s 13th store and first Florida location.
“Jacksonville is a really big market for us,” she said. Spartina 449 sells its products in boutiques and shops.
Spartina 449 sells handbags, accessories, clothing, jewelry and gifts, including its linen and leather coordinating goods.
Maples described the products as coastal, chic, sunny and bright.
Its website shows its products are carried at several local stores, including Lucy’s Gift Boutique, Artsy Abode, Omni Amelia Island Plantation Spa and Insight at Jacksonville International Airport.
Maples said Florida is a good market but Spartina 449 has not determined more locations in the state.
“Florida is a really great market for Spartina 449. We have so many loyal fans,” Maples said.
The city is reviewing a permit application for Interior Buildouts Inc. for minor interior demolition of space at 4742 River City Drive, No. 113, at a cost of $118,000.
It appears to be former site of Denim & Soul, a concept by “The Profit” investor Marcus Lemonis.
Maples said Spartina 449 operates 12 stores and sells to 1,500 boutiques and shops.
Company founder and CEO Kay Stanley started Spartina 449 in 2009 on Daufuskie Island, South Carolina. It now is based in Bluffton, South Carolina.
The name originates from the cordgrass in the saltwater marshes along the Carolina coast, based on the Latin name of Spartina alterniflora.
And 449 is the address of the Daufuskie Island cottage where it started, focusing on a low country theme.
Spartina 449 posted a job opening for an assistant manager in Jacksonville. Maples said the number of employees depends on the location and she didn’t have an estimate for St. Johns Town Center.
