Aldi announced it will reopen its Avenues-area Southside Square store Thursday.

The store, at 9041 Southside Blvd., was the Germany-based discount chain’s first in Duval County and one of the first in the area when it opened in 2015.

Aldi will hold a ribbon-cutting at 8:25 a.m. and offer gift cards to the first 100 shoppers. On Friday, shoppers can enter a sweepstakes for a year’s supply of free produce.

Store hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Aldi said the remodeling is part of a $1.9 billion initiative to remodel and expand more than 1,300 ALDI stores nationwide by the end of 2020.

ALDI said it is investing more than $115 million to update 83 stores in Florida by the end of 2020.

ALDI said it is increasing its fresh food selection by 40 percent with more organic, convenient and easy-to-prepare options.

“Remodeling and expanding our stores gives us more room for our refreshed product selection,” said Matt Thon, Haines City division vice president for ALDI.

“We know our customers want more fresh and convenient options, and by renovating our stores, we are able to provide new products as well as more of their favorites,” he said.

Plans show renovation costs for the 21,089-square-foot store at $900,000.

Aldi has 11 confirmed sites in Clay, Duval, Nassau and St. Johns counties. It opened its first area store in October 2014 in St. Augustine.

The chain operates eight stores in Duval, Clay and St. Johns. Two others are in development in Southwest Jacksonville and in North Jacksonville at the Parkway Shops at River City Marketplace.

The first Aldi store for Nassau County also is planned.

ALDI operates more than 1,800 U.S. stores in 35 states.
