Project Danville is United Parcel Service Inc., according an economic development agreement released today by the city.
City Council adopted legislation Jan. 22 for Danville, which was not identified as UPS during the legislative process.
UPS proposes to hire 87 employees at an average annual salary of $57,540 by year-end 2022 at 9431 Florida Mining Blvd. E. in South Jacksonville, near The Avenues mall, according to the agreement.
The project is described as a $50 million investment that comprises building renovations and the purchase of equipment and other tangible personal property.
The $50 million capital investment would comprise $5 million for real estate improvements and $45 million for machinery, equipment, furniture and fixtures.
The city and UPS signed the agreement Feb. 15 in which the city agreed to pay up to $52,200 as its part of a $261,000 Qualified Target Industry Tax Refund — $3,000 per job of which $600 is from the city. The state pays the rest.
The annual payroll would be $5 million, excluding benefits.
UPS Media Relations Manager Kim Krebs said the Atlanta-based company continually evaluates where to expand to meet customer demand.
“The leased 9431 East Florida Mining Blvd property is one of the locations UPS is considering to further optimize our ground network across Florida and the Southeast,” Krebs said in an emailed response.
She said leasing the space “is one of many initial steps in the feasibility and planning process for the proposed project.”
As Danville, UPS was called an unidentified international distribution company that is considering a facility in Jacksonville.
The location would serve the company’s customer base in the Southeast. U.S. Danville also was looking at sites in several other states that include Georgia and North Carolina, according to a project summary.
The Florida Mining Boulevard address formerly housed Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals and is owned by Dubow/Shad Road Limited Partnership.
The 244,000-square-foot building is on almost 18 acres. The legislation doesn’t specify if UPS will use the entire facility and Krebs didn't have that information.
UPS is expanding its hub operation at Westside Industrial Park in West Jacksonville.
