Target was cleared to add rooftop solar panels to its department store in St. Johns Town Center.
The city issued a permit Tuesday for Pro Circuit Electrical Contracting LLC to install the array at 4567 River City Drive at a cost of $898,816.
The St. Johns Town Center store is one of Minneapolis-based Target Corp.’s 500 stores targeted for rooftop solar by next year.
On. Oct. 15, Target emailed a statement that it plans to develop a solar rooftop installation at the store but had no details because work had not started.
Target says on corporate.target.com that its goal in operating energy-efficient buildings is to increase the number of structures with rooftop solar panels to 500 by 2020. It says 350 are completed in 20 states.
Stores that use solar power generate 15 to 30 percent of their energy from the resource, according to the company.
Target operates 1,855 stores and 40 distribution centers in the U.S. It has 11 stores in Northeast Florida.
