City Council President Tommy Hazouri is home after being released Aug. 3 from Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville following a lung transplant surgery.
In a news release Aug. 4, Hazouri’s staff said the Council president and former Jacksonville mayor thanked the community for support during his recovery.
“While the healing process will be long and arduous, City Council President Tommy Hazouri says Zoom will soon be his friend,” a Hazouri spokesperson said. “He wants to humbly thank everyone for their prayers.”
The spokesperson told the Daily Record that a decision for when Hazouri would resume his duties has not been made.
Hazouri, 75, was admitted and underwent the lung transplant surgery July 25, according to his office, less than a month after he was sworn in as Council president.
Council Vice President Sam Newby was named acting Council president July 26 while Hazouri was out on the recovery. Council member Brenda Priestly Jackson temporarily replaced Newby as Council vice president.
Hazouri is the first Democrat to hold the Council presidency in nearly 27 years, according to the Duval County Democratic Party. He served as Jacksonville mayor from 1987-91.
