With adaptations for the COVID-19 pandemic’s social distancing, the Jacksonville Bar Association’s annual golf tournament will be played Sept. 30 at Deerwood Country Club.

When the pandemic shutdown began in March, the association transitioned its board meetings, committee meetings, CLE programs and other traditional functions to the virtual environment, but Zoom won’t work for the golf tournament.

In previous years, as many as 82 JBA members participated, but the field this year will be limited to 60 entrants because each player will have a golf cart and that’s how many are available at Deerwood, said JBA Executive Director Craig Shoup.

He said about half of the entries were reserved as of Aug. 25.

The event begins at noon with practice and a socially distanced boxed lunch and ends with the equally socially distanced awards reception.

The captain’s choice shotgun start will tee off at 1 p.m.

Registration is $175 per player or $600 for a foursome.

Sponsors to date are Ameris Bank, Dex Imaging, Arcadia Settlements Group, Dixon Hughes Goodman, MemberBenefits, Mullholland Investigation and Computer Forensics, Orange Legal, Florida Lawyers Mutual Insurance Co., Joytel, CH Mediation, BVI Business Valuation Inc. and Charles Vann Consulting.

Florida Coastal in compliance with ABA standards

At its Aug. 13-14 meeting, the Council of the Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar of the American Bar Association considered the status of Florida Coastal School of Law regarding its alleged noncompliance with Standard 316, the admissions and academic performance standards required for accredited law schools.

After the meeting, the council released a statement:

“Following consideration of the record in the matter and the Law School’s response to the Council’s May 2020 Decision Letter, the Council concluded that the information provided by the Law School is sufficient to demonstrate compliance with Standard 316. Accordingly, the Rule 13(a)(2) hearing is cancelled in accordance with Rule 20(d). The Florida Coastal School of Law remains an approved law school.”

That means Florida Coastal representatives are not required to appear before the Council at its meeting in May in Chicago, said Florida Coastal Dean Peter Goplerud.

“We are pleased that the Council of the Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar of the ABA has determined that we are in compliance with its Bar pass standard. This is welcome and expected news as we embark on a new school year at Coastal Law,” Goplerud said Aug. 24.
