Famous Amos will close its location at 3911 University Blvd. W. on Jan. 7 after nearly 40 years in operation.
Co-owner Josephine Phelan said Jan. 6 the restaurant was performing well, but leasing the property she and her husband, John, own was a better financial choice.
They will lease the space to La Nopalera Mexican Restaurant, she said. She didn’t have a timeline for when the restaurant would move into the space.
“The same as the other locations really, the property is more valuable, so it just made sense,” Phelan said.
Famous Amos operates two other locations, at 8265 Normandy Blvd. and 11565 N. Main St. Those two restaurants are doing well, and there are no plans to close them, she said. Phelan said they don’t own those buildings.
“They perform really, really well,” she said.
The University Boulevard restaurant will close for good around 2 p.m. Jan. 7, she said.
Employees at the University Boulevard location have been offered jobs at the two remaining locations.
The restaurant closed its Mandarin location in June. The Phelans sold the building at 10339 San Jose Blvd. to Harvest House of Cannabis by Harvest USA of Tempe, Arizona, for $1,250,000.
