JEA will close its Downtown business office beginning March 23 to protect customers and employees from possible COVID-19 exposure.

The city-owned utility announced in a news release March 20 that the office at 21 W. Church St. will remain closed until further notice.

Customers can pay bills online at jea.com, by phone and at the 200 Jacksonville businesses that process JEA bills including Publix and Winn-Dixie.

JEA agents remain available to handle customer issues by phone.

In a video statement March 19, interim CEO Melissa Dykes reminded JEA ratepayers that the utility will not disconnect services while the coronavirus is an active threat, a decision issued  March 15.

“We’re not disconnecting utility services for nonpayment while we’re in this state of emergency,” Dykes said. “Please know that we will work with you on payment arrangements and other programs.”

She also asked Northeast Florida residents to not approach JEA workers in the field and to practice social distancing to help slow the spread of COVID-19.

Dykes used the video message to debunk rumors that the new coronavirus has contaminated the JEA service area’s water supply. Dykes said JEA’s water is “contaminant free.”
