Girl Scouts of Gateway Council is providing a virtual summer camp program aimed at helping girls continue learning and growing despite COVID-19 restrictions.

As a community service, the council has opened the program to nonmember girls in the community.

“We are creating new traditions with our reimagined 2020 summer camp experience. The program is designed to bring learning and skill building to girls, wherever they are,” said Mary Anne Jacobs, CEO of Girl Scouts of Gateway Council, in a news release.

The camp comprises 12 weeklong programs to engage girls in at-home activities to help them continue to learn and connect with their peers and mentors. Each themed week will give girls the opportunity to earn badges and gain experience in topics like journalism, outdoors, art, photography, theater, computer programming and STEM.

Sessions are scheduled Monday-Friday with program content from subject matter experts, along with independent activity work. Program cost includes any earned badges, a fun patch, a T-shirt and necessary materials and supplies.

At-home camp opportunities are available to all girls, even if they are not registered Girl Scouts. The programs are designed to fulfill the need for social engagement and educational enrichment at a time when many traditional camps and in-person activities are canceled or restricted.

Since March, Girl Scouts of Gateway Council has been offering online programs to help girls stay connected to the Girl Scout experience and their troops. The sessions included educational, entertainment, exercise and other activities to provide girls an engaging complement to traditional virtual learning.

“These programs are designed to fight isolation, loneliness and brain-drain which are common in a typical summer and may be more prevalent because of the restrictions imposed because of the global pandemic,” Jacobs said.
