The University of Florida Levin College of Law has launched a scholarship program for graduates of Historically Black Colleges and Universities seeking to enter the legal profession.
The program will award full-tuition scholarships to at least five HBCU graduates enrolling at UF Law every year, according to a news release from The Florida Bar.
UF Law established the endowed scholarship with lead gifts totaling more than $1.1 million, including an initial gift from Yolanda Cash Jackson.
A $1 million gift was made by longtime UF Law supporter Hugh Culverhouse, who said he was moved to make the gift after the recent death of civil rights leader and U.S. Rep. John Lewis.
Scholarship recipients will be recognized as John Lewis Scholars and will interact with UF Law’s Black alumni network throughout the nation.
The law school will begin a campaign to match the Culverhouse gift and grow the fund to at least $2 million before 2022.

There is a vacancy for one attorney to serve a six-year term on the state Judicial Qualifications Commission beginning Jan. 1, 2021, and expiring Dec. 31, 2026.
The 15-member commission is authorized under Article V, Section 12, Florida Constitution, to investigate complaints against judges whose conduct demonstrates a present unfitness to hold office and recommends disciplinary action to the Supreme Court.
