Jacksonville residents can now use Uber to order groceries from Winn-Dixie and have them delivered.

Uber said in a news release it is partnering with Jacksonville-based Southeastern Grocers to offer the service here and in three other Florida cities starting Sept. 23.

Customers can order through Uber. Cornershop, a company Uber is acquiring, will fulfill the orders. Deliveries can be immediate or scheduled.

Uber says the deal with SEG is its first major grocery retailer partnership in Florida. Other markets starting the service are Miami, Orlando and Tampa. The service also includes Fresco y Más stores.

“Grocery delivery is a priority we’re pursuing at Uber-speed across the country, and in partnership with SEG, Floridians can now turn to the Uber app to get the things they need from the supermarkets they know and love,” said Uber Global Head of Grocery Raj Beri.

“Our customers and communities count on us to adapt quickly to their shifting needs, and right now they need easy and safe access to their groceries more than ever before,” said Adam Kirk, senior vice president of marketing for Southeastern Grocers.

“Our home state of Florida has been on the front lines of the pandemic – we’re eager to roll out a cutting-edge service to support them both for today and into the future,” he said.

Ride-sharing company Uber started its grocery delivery service in the U.S. in July in Dallas and Miami. Cornershop was founded in 2015 in Chile and it says it is one of the largest grocery delivery services in Latin America. Uber announced in 2019 it was acquiring the company and the deal awaits regulatory approval in Mexico, CNN reported.

Southeastern Grocers is the parent company of Bi-Lo, Fresco y Más, Harveys Supermarket and Winn-Dixie.

Uber joins a grocery delivery market in Jacksonville with competition. Residents can use Shipt, which is owned by Target, to have groceries from Costco, Winn-Dixie, Publix, Target and Harveys delivered. Publix and The Fresh Market offer delivery through Instacart. Walmart offers grocery delivery.

Uber also offers restaurant food delivery through Uber Eats. The company had been working to expand its delivery options as the COVID-19 pandemic has reduced its ride-sharing businesses.

On July 16, InstaCart sued Cornershop, accusing it of allegedly stealing thousands of its copyrighted and licensed images, along with product descriptions and pricing data, CNN reported.
