Members of the public are invited to volunteer on or before March 22 for a three-year term on the Florida Board of Bar Examiners beginning Nov. 1.

The board ensures that recent law school graduates and attorneys licensed in other states seeking admission to The Florida Bar have met the requirements regarding character and fitness, education and technical competence.

A public member volunteer must have a bachelor’s degree and be deemed qualified by the state Supreme Court to assess whether applicants meet the essential eligibility requirements for admission under the Rules of the Supreme Court Relating to Admissions to the Bar.

Previous public member volunteers had experience in education, medicine, psychology, science, accounting, statistical analysis and other professions. Lawyers are not eligible.

Board members of the Bar Examiners must be able to attend about 10 meetings a year in Florida locations, with travel and subsistence expenses reimbursed. Board members should be willing and able to devote the equivalent of 3-4 days’ work a month on board business, depending on committee assignments.

Board members should be interested in seeking to improve the Bar examination and its administration and evaluating the character and fitness of applicants seeking a license to practice law in Florida.

Board members should be free of adverse interests, conflicting duties or inconsistent obligations that may or appear to interfere with the proper administration of the board’s mandate from the court.
