Standard Sand & Silica Co., which operates Surface Prep Supply in Jacksonville, wants to convert the former Overby’s Inc. property along Philips Highway.
Davenport-based Standard Sand & Silica, which makes industrial sand, applied for a permit to convert the building at 2619 Philips Highway to replace its operation near Springfield.
Surface Prep Supply sells abrasives, coating and athletic field products and rents and sells sandblasting equipment and supplies.
The new location previously housed Overby’s, which repaired luxury used cars.
Overby Holdings LLC sold the land to an investor in November 2019. The 1.5-acre site is south of San Marco.
The permit application says Standard Sand & Silica will remodel 16,295 square feet of the 18,556-square-foot facility.
Insight General Contractors Inc. is the contractor for the $255,000 project. Brian Boatright Architect Inc. of Orange Park is the architect.
Surface Prep Supply Branch Manager Chris Thomas said March 2 it is making the move “to be able to carry sandblasting items and industrial coatings items as well.”
“We sell water filtration media, everything sandblasting related, athletic field products,” he said by email. Surface Prep Supply’s tagline is “Cover All Your Bases.”
Plans show showroom and storage space. Substantial work completion is expected in April.
Thomas said the company is leasing the property.
Surface Prep Supply has four employees and possibly will add more, he said.
Standard Sand & Silica operates three Surface Prep Supply locations in Miami, Haines City and at 600 E. Eighth St. in Jacksonville in the Phoenix Eastside area next to Springfield. Thomas said the operation opened in 2005.
Property records show Rinker Materials Corp. owns the almost 2.8-acre Eighth Street property.
Standard Sand & Silica said it is one of the largest industrial sand manufacturers in the Southeast U.S. with locations around Florida.
It also supplies international companies directly or through other parties.
Standard Sand & Silica has operated since 1945. It registered Surface Prep Supply Inc. with the state in 2007.
Thomas said Standard Sand & Silica makes or produces filter sand and industrial sand. It has plants in Davenport, Hawthorne and Lake Wales.
He said the Jacksonville operation orders from those plants for shipment here.
