Migrating from the island of St. Kitts to the U.S. was for me like embarking on a new journey, and it was more than a process. The path of migration is not a piece of cake.
Although I knew nothing about the U.S. legal system, my determination motivated me to learn and understand immigration law to help other people like myself have the opportunity for a better life.
Looking back, there were many experiences that helped me get to where I am today.
One of those experiences that brought me to the first step of my journey to becoming a lawyer was getting to know the process of admission into a law school.
From those beginnings and up to this point, considering the journey was a struggle at times, I always have been passionate about this quest. I am happy I remained determined not only to complete the process, but also to be part of the process that allowed remarkable experiences to lead me to where I am today.
Who knew I would complete this major accomplishment just before a pandemic put our nation on house arrest? I guess it is true what they say, “We can’t predict the future.”
I never thought shortly after deciding to open my solo practice law firm, I would be faced with extra challenges such as trying to grow a small business and bring clients into my firm while making sure to be safe during a pandemic.
As a new lawyer, I pictured my career going in a different direction. I expected to finish law school, become a licensed attorney and immediately start working for a local medical malpractice law firm. However, the decision to open my firm was the best thing I’ve done.
I learned from the proverbial phrase, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” It is important that we take and learn from each experience as it comes.
That’s why this pandemic experience should not make us focus on the negativities of life. Instead, we should look for the positives and use our attention and energy to help others.
I am grateful for the support and encouragement received from fellow lawyers and mentors along the way, especially during this pandemic. I hope to share my experiences as a new lawyer with others, in the hope that my sharing will provide inspiration during these difficult and uncertain times.
